What was the book about a white woman kidnapped by Indians who later escapes and returns with white

The book took place in the time of early American settlers. The woman's family and neighbors were killed but she was kidnapped and made to marry an Indian chief. She had his child but didn't know her children from her white husband were killed. She escapes the Indian chief and walks for months with barely enough food to keep alive and returns with white hair due to the stresses put on her body... I believe it was a real story...
