Why is my chihuahua's hair turning white so fast?

I rescued my pup so I don't know specifically how old she is but after taking her the vet we think she may be 3 or 4. She is black but her face is gettng a lot of white hair, is she older or does this mean she is stressed??? Any advice?

Actually, the premature whitening of the fur on the face is GENETIC. Dogs with the gene will begin to get white hairs on their face, usually the muzzle and eyebrows, when they are past the age of 2.

Normal whitening due to age occurs much later, around the age of seven.

It doesn't mean there's anything wrong with your dog, or that she's stressed. It's just in her genes.

its not unusual, maybe she is older than you think

it could be either. after a dog hits 2 it is hard to estimate age so she could older than you think. it could also be stress. when did you rescue her and from what?

it is also not uncommon for animal fur color to change. often the fur will get darker to match the color of the ears but that is for buff colored. but it is normal for black hair dogs to get white hairs, becuase itis easier to see against black fur rather than grey or whatever

good luck hope she will be fine!

Some dogs just turn white earlier than others. One of my greyhounds, who's black, had an awful lot of white on his face and backs of his legs when he was 2. I wouldn't worry about it at all - if she's healthy, active and happy, she's not stressed, just prematurely grey!!

Being stressed could cause her to turn white faced. Ive heard of dogs faces turning completely white over night when someone or a companion animal has died. So if you rescued her she could have been in some bad situations! JUST LOVE HER!
